Are You O.K.?
Introducing the Ocean Kinship (O.K.) Project
We're connected to the sea in ways we don’t always see or fully appreciate; our shared origins, interdependence, shared stakes. The Ocean Kinship project is about shifting our perspectives on this connection.
Inspired by the idea of human kinship – rooted in mutual understanding, respect, and care – this new initiative invites us to rethink our relationship with our big blue space as something more reciprocal, more personal. Because when we know our oceans better, the better equipped and motivated we are to care for them. And that’s what Ocean Kinship is all about.
Blue Health
This term refers to the profound connection between the ocean and human wellbeing—how time spent near, in, or on the sea can nourish the body, calm the mind, and inspire the soul. From the rhythm of the waves reducing stress to the benefits of seaweed in skincare and nutrition, Blue Health explores the science and soul of how our waters heal, restore, and reconnect us to nature.
Sea More. Be More.
Over the years, I’ve shared practical guides to help people create ocean-powered skincare at home, in a way that's respectful of our precious marine resources. This is an element of Earthly Rebels that I love, love, love! The best part? Hearing how useful it's been to others, and learning from people’s feedback and ideas. So naturally, I want to take it further. And that’s how the idea for the O.K. project came about.
Through storytelling that fosters ocean literacy and brings ocean craftsmanship to life; from practical guides that unlock the magic of seaweed, to collaborative ideas that inspire action, the O.K. project will equip people with the knowledge and tools to reconnect with the sea in hands-on, meaningful ways.
No guilt trips, no doomsday messaging—just fresh ideas, beautiful crafts, inspiring stories, curiosity, and a whole load of fun!
Part of the bigger picture
Across Wales, there’s a growing movement to strengthen our connection to the sea and deepen our understanding of how it shapes us – and how we, in turn, shape it. Ocean Kinship is part of this wider effort, sharing the same goal: to equip people with knowledge and experiences that inspire care, respect, and sustainable action.
By creating engaging, practical resources, and bringing ocean literacy to life, Ocean Kinship will help people not only appreciate the sea’s importance, but also play an active role in protecting it.
Stay tuned! Over the coming months, I'll be sharing more about Ocean Kinship, including the first glimpses of our digital guides, stories, and hands-on resources.
Finally, I’d love to hear from you. If you have any thoughts, questions, or ideas about Ocean Kinship, feel free to get in touch. Drop me a message, leave a comment, or share your own stories of your connection to the sea.
